Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is provided by huge industrial batteries that have to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety procedures should be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is essential to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the post should not be blocked and an injured employee should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When in the vicinity of a charging area and battery, open fire are prohibited. Never permit items such as matches or lighters to be used while an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These gases are both toxic and explosive.
