History
During the year 1919, Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started. The company was established by an engineer and pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology by Anton Raky. The initial company name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in 1937, when the Salzgitter Group purchased a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling machinery. In 1986, the company bought the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the following years. Currently, SMAG is the world's market leader, using grabs for worldwide cargo handling applications, agriculture and waste disposal.
