The company Potain was established in La Clayette, France in the year 1928. Ever since that time, the company has grown into a leading manufacturer of cranes. The company is responsible for more than 100,000 cranes in operation all over the globe. At present, the company makes more than 60 models from various manufacturing facilities inside France, China, Germany, Italy and Portugal. The company represents many different product ranges used for various applications. These equipments are sold through a global Manitowoc dealer network.

The family of Potain cranes are divided into different tower crane families. The smallest cranes produced by Potain are the self-erecting cranes. These cranes vary from 1 ton to 7.98 ton capacity. The next size up is the top-slewing cranes which are both bigger and higher. These cranes range from 7.98 to 64 tons. Moreover, these are the largest special application cranes which are custom-made. These models offer a reach capacity of one hundred sixty tons.

Several of the main innovations with the company include the LLC series of hoists, the Dialog control system and the Vision Cab. The company's growing reputation has expanded their appeal with various models. Potain cranes are often found on traditional construction sites, bridge building projects, power stations, ship-building projects and shipbuilding yards.

Two of Manitowac's largest facilities are based within the US. Their manufacturing facility is based within the state of Wisconsin. In this state, both crawler cranes and the tower crane parts are constructed in Pennsylvania inside the Shady Grove plant. Here mobile cranes and boom trucks are built. Regional offices are located in Brazil and in Mexico. As well, the extensive dealer network found all over the USA and Rhode Island offers support and coverage unrivalled by any other crane manufacturer.
